.........Room 422, Room 423.......... Leita Thompson - room 424. Ah, that's where she's staying. Just up ahead.......
Today was a typical wintery day in Oswego, NY, and we were going to visit an elderly woman in the hospital. She had fallen some time ago and had become so weak that she had to be hospitalized on Saturday. Lieta Thompson was a dear lady who loved God with all her heart and lived her life according to his will, a true example of Christian devotion. She attended our church and campmeeting for many years until she was unable to get out. At 97, she was a remarkably strong woman, outliving both of her children......
Daddy, Evangeline and I were going down the hall in the hospital on our way to pay a quick visit to Sister Thompson. It was the strangest thing.....I just had this feeling that we'd be the last to see her. But she's pulled through so many times. What would make me think this time was any different? I turned in at Room 424. And when I saw her lying in bed, so ghostly white I thought, "...uhhh, she's dead..." At that moment a nurse who was standing by her bedside asked us to step outside with her. "I'm sorry, she just passed away."
It had happened just moments before. The doctor hadn't even been there yet. We had just missed her. It was sad and yet, at the same time, strangely happy. There was no doubt in my mind that she was home now - home with her Saviour. No more pain, no more sorrow. Just joy and happiness.
Now, as I look back over the day, I think of what I've learned...... Life is really like a fleeting vapor - it's only what we do for God that counts . When we cross "the curtian of death", we will enter into our eternal reward. Can others say about you what people said about her?
